In my WPO facilitators retreat today, we were treated to a video by Dewitt Jones. I didn’t think I had seen it before, but the minute it began I remembered. I HAD seen it, I just didn’t remember the guy’s name. I won’t forget it now.
Dewitt has been an award winning photographer for companies such as National Geographic. His photos are amazing, but what is really interesting is his perspective on creativity. He’s culled some great insight on creativity from his work and shares them in an article Seeing the Ordinary as Extraordinary. If you’re ADD like me, you can get the gist of his key points (and a look at some of his extraordinary photography) through a presentation called Everyday Creativity.
I think the biggest take-away lessons for me were:

– Continue to raise the bar…there is more than one right and you never know when good will get better. Persistence and patience pay.

– Patterns become prisons went they go too long unquestioned or disturbed (love this!).

– There’s always another way to look at problems and more then one right answer. Problems can always be framed as opportunities.
Before digital cameras became mainstream, we held back capturing every moment because we worried about wasting film. We didn’t want to fail or miss a better opportunity. How often do we let this same attitude hamper our personal and professional progress? It’s digital now, baby.

Indeed, we should never miss every opportunity on capturing great moments. My creativity on taking good pictures usually focus on the subject and the lightings too.
I do agree your photography routines can be creativity killers, but as you said problems do tend to be opportunities in wolves clothing. Often times when taking pictures you think all went wrong, but instead you uncovered a new and exciting perspective which brings new life and passion into your photos.

“Patterns become prisons went they go too long unquestioned or disturbed.” I absolutely love this statement. and I think that it could very well be applied to situations beyond photography. It’s almost a way of life. Consider a photographer particularly; what if his/her day was total mechanization? The same routine always? It wouldn’t make for a very interesting photographer and his/her work would probably be less than interesting as a result.
